On Nov. 4, World Learning hosted social media guru Beth Kanter to talk about how non-profits can magnify their mission impact through social networking. If you attended, we’d love to know what your biggest take away was from the event? What will you do differently? And, what can we do differently? Send us your input on how nonprofits can better harness the power of social media.

Don’t be afraid to experiment! We are always sceptical of trying new things but social media is about viral, organic and free-flowing. Be honest and transparent. That really hit home for me.

Beth taught me the importance of leveraging free agents. We have this talented global network of participants bursting with energy, creativity, an enthusiasm. How can we utilize social media to engage and support the efforts of these participants, instead of merely monitoring and reporting on them?

I really like your question, Michael. This is essentially the main challenge that we face when we are trying to make the FORECAST blog more interactive and interesting to read.
Something that I made a note of during Beth’s presentation is “being more like facebook.” It’s not being a facebook, but being LIKE facebook, meaning more dynamic, fun, and live. And this is what facebook does extremely well.
The second biggest take-away for me was building “the ladder of love.” I think it is an excellent metaphor or analogy. To build a successful online network, you need to build your relationships with these people first.
