Conditions to Apply as an Adult Mentor
by Manhal Najeeb
Manhal, an adult mentor on Exchange 1 of the 2012 IYLEP, reflects on applying to the program and provides advice on what to expect and how to prepare.
Dear adults, as the IYLEP high school program provides the opportunity for adults to participate in the program, lets have a look at the conditions so they can select you.
When you apply as an adult remember that you are also a participant like the students, so don’t feel that you are in a higher level and that you have to accomplish all of the roles 100%. There will be certain flexibility but again you are in a place that makes you responsible among the group so they can be obliged and have you as a good example for them.
When you apply to the program, there is a part which includes essay questions. This part exhibits how you will respond. Besides, you have to prepare a good CV if you are employed and you must be honest in everything otherwise your application will be dismissed. Before you apply, you have to have good experience about how towork in a group, solve problems if they exist, and always being in touch with the staff.
Furthermore, an important function when you deal with everyone is the use of language. Your English should be fluent so when you talk with all participants and even when you visit certain areas like when we were there, you meet people whom only speak English. Finally, the program is a very good experience for you so try to exploit it and it may not be repeated again.
You will meet lots of groups there from different countries so the program contains entertainment and hard work. It’s not difficult – you only need to be on time, active, working, and having fun.
Good luck to all and for any support, don’t hesitate to contact me.
