The Leaders Advancing Democracy-Mongolia Program (LEAD Mongolia) is a two year initiative designed to support Mongolia’s next generation of democracy advocates. The program is run by World Learning, and funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).

The aspiring leaders arrived in Washington, D.C. eager to learn about democracy, and how they can work together to tackle Mongolia’s most pressing issues, including corruption, poverty, discrimination, urbanization and the environment.

During the three week exchange program participants met with members of Congress and other leaders and advocates working on environment, transparency, and poverty issues in the U.S.

The program kicked off in Washington, DC, with orientation, sight-seeing, and workshops on leadership, conflict management, and organizational change as well as digital storytelling. The group then continued on to Charlottesville, Virginia, where they participated in intensive courses and seminars in leadership.

The series of workshops offered the participants invaluable advice and insight on how to tackle Mongolia’s core issues. Click through the fellows’ stories to learn more about how their projects will create positive change in their local communities.

Impact

  • I think this program is empowering us to deliver our experience to our peers that are living and working in Mongolia. Through us, we can make a movement to increase the contribution of the youth in Mongolia.

  • I have learned many new things and heard interesting stories about democracy and freedom with the help of the sign language interpreters provided by World Learning. I think if deaf youths participate in this program, they will be equipped to implement projects and work with other young people, and they will have the support to do so.

    Nemkekhbayar Batnasan
  • We need to equip Mongolian journalists with world-class education and an unshakable belief that what they do will make a difference.

    Tanan Myagmar
  • What I learned in this program is that if we want to change society, we have to work as a team to be able to educate the public because real power is in the hands of the citizens, not the hands of the decision makers.

    Dr. Lodoisamba Delgerzul
  • Whether we are working in the private sector or civil society, we are contributing to a much more democratic and open, free civil society within our country. So from this trip, I realized that every person needs to contribute to the wellbeing of people in this country.

We asked our first-ever group of LEAD Mongolia Fellows about their U.S. exchange program experience. Here’s what they had to say:
