Africa mixtape: Kenya’s socially conscious rap

The Africa Mixtape is an ongoing collection of songs handpicked by SIT Study Abroad students, alumni, faculty, and staff. Today’s post is by Becca Wolinsky, an alumna of SIT Study Abroad Kenya. Currently, Becca is working at UP Education Network in Boston, MA, helping teachers get certified. She is an aspiring physician, and in August she will begin a pre-med postbac program at Bryn Mawr College. In the spring of 2013, I studied abroad in Nairobi, Kenya, with SIT.  The four months I spent there were the happiest months I’ve ever had. While in Nairobi, I had the privilege of being placed in a host family with Otto Stefan, aka Ottomatic, a rap artist in Nairobi. SIT alum earns coveted fellowship to support Kenyan girls school

World Learning congratulates SIT Study Abroad alum Jessica Posner and her friend Kennedy Odede, whose efforts to educate girls in a Kenyan slum has earned them a 2010 Echoing Green Fellowship. Their project beat out those of more than 1,000 applicants for the fellowship, which supports the work of emerging social entrepreneurs who respond to the world’s most pressing challenges. Posner, a Wesleyan University student and 2007 participant of SIT Study Abroad’s Kenya: Health and Development Program, was so moved by her experiences in Kenya that she teamed up with Odede, a native of Nairobi, to establish the Kibera School for Girls. Now in its second year, the school uses an innovative approach that provides education as well as essential health and economic services to the community, with a special focus on young women and girls. SIT alum finds education scholarships for Kenyan youth

Written by Lydia Spitalny, a SIT Study Abroad Kenya alum. She is currently the Co-Executive Director of Education for the Future Foundation, an education nonprofit organization in Kenya that is partnering with SIT Study Abroad Kenya. Lydia has also completed the SIT Graduate Institute CONTACT course in peacebuilding and conflict transformation. The greatest lesson I have taken from my experiences with SIT and World Learning is the necessity of community.  I first came to Kenya in 2007 on the SIT Study Abroad Kenya program. I enrolled in the program in order to practice my Kiswahili, explore a continent that I felt was deeply misunderstood, and to visit a country I had studied for several years.
