Mentoring a New Generation of Peace Builders

A Washington Nationals baseball game isn’t the most likely place to begin a peacebuilding process, but that’s exactly where SIT Graduate Institute alumni Jaime Horn and Kim Massey saw two young women from Syria and the United States put their differences behind them. Horn and Massey are the founders and sole staff members of the Andi Leadership Institute for Young Women (ALI), a new organization that brings together women from the United States and abroad for short-term peacebuilding and leadership workshops. The first ALI group, which included participants from Syria, Iraq, and Afghanistan, spent three weeks in Washington, DC, and New York City this past August, where they engaged in dialogue sessions, met with prominent peace builders, and bonded during backyard barbecues and sporting events. The Experiment in Focus: 2013 Group Leaders

Since 1932, all Experiment programs have been guided by group leaders, chosen for their youth leadership skills, experience abroad, and language competency. After attending a leadership training workshop in Vermont, group leaders meet their Experimenters at their departure airports in the United States, and collaborate with both in-country partners and US staff throughout the program. Reunion Conference in Mexico: My Top Three Favorite Moments

by Samantha Pantoja, 2012 Jóvenes en Acción alumna From April 18–20, 2013, the Reunion Conference of the Jovenes en Accion Program took place in Mexico City, where the 2012 generation of youths, reunited in order to receive their participation award for the program. After almost nine months of knowing each other, the participants of this program have become positive leaders and change agents in each of their communities by developing projects in which they try to reduce social issues by teaching arts or sports, raising awareness of social problems, or giving solutions and accomplishing them. This program, brought together by the Secretaría de Educación Pública (Public Education Secretary), United States Embassy in Mexico, and various private sector representatives, gave me the extraordinary opportunity to become part of a great family of Mexican leaders and improve a community in Mexicali, Baja California, with the project Cultura Joven (Youth Culture). … Continue reading

Easter with a Host Family

Currently, 24 youth and four adults of are in the US participating in activities and site visits to build leadership and civic participation skills as Youth Ambassadors for Argentina and Chile. They were also lucky enough to celebrate Easter Sunday with their host families in Kansas City, KS and Dallas, TX. Hello everyone, my name is Marco, and I belong to the Chilean delegation of Youth Ambassadors (YAs). I am from Punta Arenas, I am 15 years old, and I am with the YAs in Kansas City.
