Mentoring a New Generation of Peace Builders

A Washington Nationals baseball game isn’t the most likely place to begin a peacebuilding process, but that’s exactly where SIT Graduate Institute alumni Jaime Horn and Kim Massey saw two young women from Syria and the United States put their differences behind them. Horn and Massey are the founders and sole staff members of the Andi Leadership Institute for Young Women (ALI), a new organization that brings together women from the United States and abroad for short-term peacebuilding and leadership workshops. The first ALI group, which included participants from Syria, Iraq, and Afghanistan, spent three weeks in Washington, DC, and New York City this past August, where they engaged in dialogue sessions, met with prominent peace builders, and bonded during backyard barbecues and sporting events. Recognizing Visionary International Women Leaders

As part of Women’s history month in March, World Learning celebrates the Centenary of International Women’s Day, March 8, 2011 – recognizing visionary international women leaders in our network. International Women’s Day was begun in 1911 as a day to press for working women’s rights in Europe. However since then it has grown to encompass all aspects of women’s equality and women’s efforts for peace, as well as recognizing women’s leadership across the globe. Nobel Peace Prize laureates Wangari Maathai and Jody Williams embody the spirit of International Women’s Day. They are two of the most recognized examples of the international women’s leadership for peace and equality that World Learning has fostered for over 75 years. Both women have each built international movements that changed the world, and are now collaborating on the Nobel Women’s Initiative for women’s equality, peace and justice.  Jody Williams … Continue reading
